Prof. Dr. med. Uwe Schlegel is a specialist doctor in neurology and an expert in tumor diseases of the nervous system.
Prof. Schlegel studied medicine in Essen and Berlin. He completed his training as a board certified neurologist at the Neurological University Hospital in Bonn. From 1984 to 1988, he worked as a resident there, and then he spent 2 years as a research fellow at the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York. In 1991, he established a clinical and scientific neuro-oncological focus at the Neurological University Hospital in Bonn, first as a specialist doctor and then as a senior physician from 1993. He completed his habilitation in 1994, was appointed as a leading senior physician in 1998, and was promoted to extraordinary professor in 2000. In 2003, he was appointed to a foundation professorship for Clinical Neuro-oncology in Bonn, and in 2004, he became the director of the Neurological University Hospital in Bochum, which he led until September 2022.
Prof. Schlegel is active in numerous committees of professional societies and is currently the spokesperson for the Commission of Neuro-oncological Centers of the German Cancer Society.
